When you have hair issues like brittleness, dullness, dryness, and damage, it's tempting to blame it all on your hair. But the reality is that problems with the hair usually indicate co-occurring problems with the scalp.

If you're having trouble with your hair, you likely you have hair AND scalp problems.

While we love good sulfate-free and no-suds shampoos, silicone-free water-based conditioners, and even pH balancing rinses, there is plenty you can do for your hair and scalp from the inside out with your nutrition.

Here are 5 key vitamins for happy hair and scalp from the inside out:

  1. Vitamin A. All cells need vitamin A, and that's especially true for hair, the fastest growing cells in the body. Also helps sebaceous glands make sebum, your natural moisturizer. Natural sources: sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, and spinach 🍠 🥕🎃 🥬

  2. Vitamin B7 (Biotin) and other B vitamins. Stimulates production of keratin, a protein, in hair. Natural sources: egg, sweet potato, banana, mushroom, broccoli, and avocado 🍳 🍠 🍌 🍄 🥦 🥑

  3. Vitamin C. Neutralizes effects of oxidative stress on hair growth and resilience. Also is important for the production of collagen (for a happy scalp) and absorption of iron (for oxygenation of scalp and follicles). Natural sources: orange, lemon, strawberry, bell pepper🍊🍋🍓🫑

  4. Vitamin D. Might help with the creation of new follicles. Natural sources: fatty fish 🐟 🐠 🍣

  5. Vitamin E. Neutralizes effects of oxidative stress on hair growth and resilience. Might boost hair growth. Natural sources: avocado, almonds, spinach, and sunflower seeds 🥑 🌻
